This Read Me document provides information about your LaserWriter Select 310 that is not covered in the user's guide. You may want to print this Read Me document and keep it for future reference.
GETTING BETTER PERFORMANCE
The LaserWriter Select 310 printer driver performs slightly better if you turn on 32-bit addressing on your Macintosh. See the user's guide that came with your computer for instructions on using 32-bit addressing. (Not all models of Macintosh can use 32-bit addressing.)
PRINTING IN THE FOREGROUND WHILE BACKGROUND PRINT JOBS ARE PRINTING
If you have print jobs waiting for background printing on the LaserWriter Select 310, foreground jobs to the same printer cannot be started. You must wait until the background print jobs are finished (or postpone or cancel them) before you can use foreground printing.
USING MANY FONTS IN A DOCUMENT
A LaserWriter Select 310 printer with the standard RAM configuration (1.5 MB) may have problems printing documents requiring more than a few downloaded fonts. Each style of a font (normal, bold, italic, bold-italic) counts as a font. If you need more fonts or styles, make sure you choose Unlimited Downloadable Fonts in the Page Setup Options dialog box. See your user's guide for more information on fonts.
PRINTING VARIOUS SIZES OF ENVELOPES
The LaserWriter Select 310 printer driver can print accurately on different sizes of envelopes. In the Page Setup dialog box, you can choose individual envelope sizes #10, Monarch, DL, and C5, in addition to the standard Envelope-Center Fed option. Choosing the correct size provides more accurate printing on the envelope.
USING POSTSCRIPT AND TRUETYPE FONTS
Each time you print a document that needs downloaded fonts, the printer driver will choose between Adobe Type 1 fonts and TrueType fonts to produce the best results possible.
CLOSING THE CHOOSER BEFORE YOU PRINT
After you select the LaserWriter Select 310 port from the Chooser, be sure to close the Chooser before you try to print a document in another program. This ensures that the program will use the correct port.
SWITCHING BETWEEN THE SERIAL AND PARALLEL PORTS
If you want to switch the printer connection from the parallel port to the serial port, or vice versa, be sure to turn the printer off while you make the switch. Turn the printer on again to reconfigure the port settings. Only one cable, either the parallel or the serial cable, should be attached to the printer at a time.
PRINTING THE MOST ACCURATE REPRESENTATION OF AN IMAGE
For some types of documents, you will get the most accurate representation of the image on your monitor screen if you do the following before you print:
• Turn off Graphics Smoothing in the Page Setup dialog box
• Turn on Precision Bitmap Alignment in the Page Setup dialog box
• Choose Color/Grayscale printing in the Print Options dialog box
